Pitch Perfect Advertising
I saw this video tonight watching the World Series. It's about a guy who decided he was going to win $1 million by learning to play a video game and win a content to pitch a simulated perfect game. It's a pretty long ad in TV terms-- about two minutes--and it aired during the world series, so I'm sure it cost a pretty penny, but I have to so that it was spot on. Google has been making some great ads lately. The one where the dad sets up a gmail account to email his daughter from birth? Brought tears to my eyes.
I don't know who's doing their advertising now (and if you google it, you get a bunch of results about "adwords"--coincidence? I think not), but the ads are well done. The question becomes: does google--whose consumer services are free to use--need to advertise? Are they losing market share or is this a tactical move to protect it?
Either way, I think they're good. Check out tonight's ad here--and GO CARDINALS!:

Should I Google+?
Anyway, on to what I've done for the week!
- Pages of fiction read: 59% of a 384 page book. So, that's technically 226 pages. That's one thing you lose with a Kindle. The actual page count.
- Fiction read: The Hunger Games. I'm an idiot. I should've listened to my friends months or years ago when they told me to read these. Very entertaining.
- Fiction listened to via audiobook: None. Still enchanted by Pandora.
- Five pages written: Yes!!! I revised a section of the novel that went from 6 pages to 12. Which is good because I tend to write at too quick a pace.
- Calorie tracking: Check. But I ate horribly. I really and truly am back on it this week. And the whole week. Not just Monday through Thursday as I have been. (She writes after having half a bagel today.)
- Exercise: 290 minutes of exercise in the last week. But I missed two work outs because I was sick.
- Friends and family: Done. Komen walk time brings us all closer. Or at least me more nostalgic.
- Weight Loss: Zero. But this week will be different!
- Story submission:I did it. I submitted an edited version of my short story for the NPR Three Minute Fiction contest. I'm already a winner because I actually accomplished something.
- One revised section of novel per week: Check! Now I'm reworking the beginning of the novel. I've read beginnings of six of my favorite books to see what it is about them that cpatures me. Now I'm trying to do it.
- Anyone have any examples of good fiction beginnings they'd like to share? (Other than "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.")

Steel Myself For the Reckoning

Chef pointed out something kinda cool the other day. I'm near the top of a google search! Woo hoo!! Okay, it's not me per se, but the blog because my current name is unique and puts my info at the top of the search, but I digress.
The phrase "steel myself for the reckoning" is what landed me at the top. How did Chef figure this out, you say? He was spell checking me. Didn't think "steel" was the right spelling for the instance and noticed that when he typed in the phrase, it was a visited link that came up. And because he knows how much of a geek I am, I had the computer plopped on my lap the other day and he said "open a google tab and enter 'steel myself for the reckoning'". I did and instantly shrieked!
Of course, when I did it then, I was at the top of the list and somehow today when I tried it I was second behind a yahoo post from 2006. What's up with that? Let me know where I fall.
On another note, I'm thinking of transferring my blog to wordpress. Any words of advice for me?

Sometimes its the little things. . .
Today I spent the majority of my day in my pajamas. It's not a bad way to spend the day. However, despite being in pajamas, I was working hard pretty much the whole day. I spent a good 2-3 hours uploading all the pertinent files that I had on my work computer onto my personal laptop. One of the catches is that my personal laptop doesn't have any Windows software on it. No Word. No Power Point. No Excel. None of it.
So I was forced to try out Google Docs. It's not too bad. I was able to reformat my resume, make some changes and pretty much open any of the documents that I had transferred over. It was helpful to be able to rifle through my old files to make sure I'd remembered all of my accomplishments in nine years. Sadly, I had forgotten most and I'm stuck trying to remember what things I was so proud of during my time as the marketing director. Hmmmm. . .
Aside from that, I was also able to open my file of exported contacts. The kicker is that that contacts from my old Outlook account, the contacts in my iPhone and the contacts in my Google account are all slightly different. So I had to go through all the contacts that I wanted to sync into my phone and on Google and make sure the Outlook information matched up. There's no easy way to do this when you're not quite sure which version is the most up to date. So, another 2 and half hours later I finally had my contacts down to a mere 80. Oosh.
But now I'm ready, at least computer-wise, to move on. Now to apply for some additional jobs tomorrow. Oh the little things. . .
