No Jeans that hit the floor

There's a school system around here that has started enforcing its strict dress code. It's a PUBLIC school with what consistutes as a uniform. A uniform that I would've not had in high school.

This school system forbids:
  • Any pant that touches the ground
  • Collarless shirts
  • Jeans have to be a solid color, no bleaching or fading
  • No black tops with black pants
  • Logos can't be more than 3/4" big
  • Tops have to be tucked in, even when arms are raised
  • No strips of any kind

Are you kidding me? How does this help facilitate learning? This is the third year for the code, but the first year that the school actually enforced it. 900 kids were sent to in school suspension on the first day of classes.

Hmmm, you know those test scores that you bitched about being so low? Well, they aren't going to get any higher unless the kids ARE IN CLASS.

I'm glad that all kinds of tackiness was allowed at my school. It let me wear the giant ripped jeans that I had, the hideous brown clogs that I fancied and what became my uniform through the first part of college: white v-neck t-shirt, plaid button-down and jeans. Oh, the good old dressed down, looking like shit days.

Ash, when WE were in high school, the shit that 90% of the girls wear EVERY DAY now would have given the wearer the label of Supa-Slut.
The "no collarless shirts" part seems obsesive, but since parents these days seem to carry no truck in teaching their children how not to look like prostitutes, I'm all for letting the teachers/administrators do it for them.
I mean, seriously. Seeing a 14-year old girl's ass crack makes me wanna puke.

I mean EXCESSIVE, not "obsesive"(?). I'm a retard. Looks like it's time for more of Ms. Annie's Physical Phonics lessons.

It's PUBLIC school. Outlaw midriff bearing shirts and low-rise jeans. No tanks tops. Make skirts be as long as your arms. But once you put uniforms in public school, it might as well become a crappy ass private school with shitty lunch and no one with connections to the Ivy league.

I'm with Swampy on this one. It's FREE SCHOOL. If you're not paying for it, you should have even less say about what you wear. If these kids were paying $15,000 a year for their education, then they'd have a say.

I'm all about uniforms in public schools. I wish we had them when I was in school.

Kids have tried fighting shit like this since Laura Ingalls told her class to stop wearing "Mail Pouch" t-shirts, and the school always wins.
If they don't like it, they can go to one of those freaky alternative schools where the teachers smoke pot before class and the diplomas are printed on Charmin Ultra.

I could care less about kids having the freedom to wear whatever they want. That's what college is for.

Paying for books for public school is one thing, but when you institute a uniform that's a whole different set of costs.

Maybe if they're too poor to afford a uniform, they should be put into a special camp, hm?

Uniforms would work the same way as uniforms--they'd be on a sliding scale. Like everyone gets free books or something. Mom paid $160 for Lauren's stack of used books this year.

Oh, and there's plenty of pork in every school's budget. Enough to subsize a couple poly-cotton outfits for the kids who qualify. CHEERLEADERS, anyone? MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE SQUADS? TOILET PAPER? Please.

These damn kids today! If they would just go back to the fashions of the early nineties, this would SO not be an issue. Let's hear it for baggy sweaters with turtlenecks!

It practically IS the early 90's, what the the 9O.C.210 and everything. I don't see Mischa Barton's career going anywhere that Shannen Doherty's hasn't already been.

Swampette, you're totally right. Leggings, Giant Sweaters. Even mini-skirts always had those legless leggings under them. We got in trouble for slap bracelets and big bows.
